Chairlift attraction to be scrapped

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

The Arthurs Seat chairlift on the Mornington Peninsula is to close.

The tourist attraction has not operated since 2006 because of a series of mishaps.

Operator Richard Hudson says he’s been unable to convince State Government safety inspectors the chairlift is safe.

He says work to dismantle it started last week.

“This chairlift has been here since 1960, it’s part of the scenery,” he said.

Mornington Peninsula Tourism’s Alva Hemming says she does not expect the permanent closure to hurt other operators.

She says tourist numbers have actually gone up since the facility closed two years ago.

“It’s not to say the chairlift won’t be missed,” she said, “but given our visitation is increasing and our yield is increasing, I don’t expect it to have an impact on our future visitation.”

Trio arrested over Aust tourist death (ABC)

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Three staff members working at an Indian restaurant where an Australian tourist died have been arrested as part of a murder investigation.

Police in the town of Calangute along the beach resort strip in the south-west state of Goa say the 65-year-old man died in hospital after being assaulted during an argument in a restaurant yesterday morning.

Police say they are treating his death as murder.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted to find out how the man died.

Local newspaper reports suggest a fight broke out after the Australian criticised the way a waiter was serving his beer.

Police say the man was travelling on a tourist visa and arrived in India 10 days ago.

The Australian High Commission in New Delhi has also confirmed the death, but is waiting to receive details of the name and age of the dead man.

Go green or go under: tourism expert (ABC)

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Tasmanian tourism operators are being urged to be environmentally conscious or risk losing visitors to the state.

Delegates at a sustainability tourism conference in Launceston have heard how to adopt sustainable business practices.

Sustainable tourism expert, Kim McKay, says Tasmania must focus on its environmental performance, including reducing its carbon footprint.

“It’s absolutely vital for Tasmania,” Ms McKay said.

“It’s Tasmania’s unique selling proposition if you like, it’s the thing that Tasmania can market confidently to the world.

“This island offers so much.”

She says the local industry must understand the importance of sustainability.

“We’re seeing in research from Tourism Australia and other organisations that sustainability and environmental performance is becoming a criteria when people are selecting a destination,” Ms McKay.

“So if Australia is to be competitive in the global market place and indeed in the domestic market we’ve got to appeal to all travellers.”
